September 7th, 2007 by dian-ekowati-heriqbaldi

Paper presented in Singapore, 24-27 July, 2007

This article will discuss more about trust and smart networking/cooperation in building both the social and intellectual capital in the organizations. Cooperation would only be conducted if there is trust that would enable each party to be willingly cooperate with each other in conducting the job or activities.

Furthemore, the effort to build network might not achieve the state of smart networking unless accompanied by the tight consideration of high performing selection system of its members’ competencies to create synergistic relationship. Having such set of members’ competencies supported by members’ state of mind, organization will have its intellectual capital which in turn will be developed to be organization’s sustainable competitive advantage.

Meanwhile, Trust can be represented into an affective relationship situation, so that people are optimistic in seeing the future and have greater expectations to achieve their aims. Highly competent and reliable organizational member is a necessary condition for organizational growth, along with supporting and complementary abilities of other organizationa members, will drive innovative spirit in networking. The value and attitude of the members to behave ethically will also determine the sustainability of the organization to become a well governed and managed organization.

Finally, yet importantly, Trust is a general feeling, yet, there are certain sources that would make people are able to trust each other. Moreover, there are many perspectives on seeing trust, which differs among different cultures.

Business Strategy and Firm Approach to the Natural Environment

September 7th, 2007 by dian-ekowati-heriqbaldi

Paper to be presented in Melbourne, !8-20 November 2007.

The issue of natural environment has attracted serious concerns from the world business people and became a crucial part of international trade issues. Therefore, companies which intend to enter into global trade, are challenged to comprehend relationships between pollution prevention, ISO 14000 program, government regulations, environmental performances, and work opportunities. In addition to this, a lot of environmental violation cases in Indonesia indicate that there are only a few companies have environmental concerns. This is not only because of company negligence on environmental problems but also because of lack of law enforcement from the government. In order to avoid these problems, companies have to realize that they must consider natural environment as a potential aspect to enhance their competitive advantages.

Related to those issues, companies need to adopt approaches to face strategic, structural, and contextual problems which one of those is environmental problem (Aragon-Correa, 1998). Aragon-Correa (1998) provides a solution alternative by attaching natural environment issue with a proactive view as a consideration in changing firm’s strategic model. In his research, Aragon-Correa (1998) argues that there is a relationship between business strategy proactivity with firm approach to the natural environment. A strategy application itself could influence firm’s viewpoint in having approach to the natural environment. Moreover, business strategy tendencies correlate with company’s objective achievement (Porter, 1980). This research aims to analyze relationships between business strategy and firm approach to the natural environment. Besides that, this study also intends to examine whether industrial differences influence on firm approach to the natural environment.

This study employed Hierarchical Regression Analysis to answer question on whether there is any relationships between business strategy and firm approach to the natural environment. It can be concluded that the scale of the organizations can be perceived as a significant factor in shaping the relationship between business strategies and firms’ approach to the natural environment especially with traditional environmental operations approach. However, it should be noted that the process of accommodating natural environmental aspects into management function would not only be determined by organization scale but also by company’s business strategy. This result was aligned with study by Aragon-Correa (1998) on business strategies proactivity and firm approach to the natural environment.

Related to business strategies issues, it seems that factor significantly affecting firm intention to pursue approaches to the natural environment was differentiation business strategy. By focusing on cost leadership business strategies, firms are more possible to minimize their social responsibilities toward natural environment and assume that natural management practices will be a costly effort. It can be understood as firms with tendency to conduct cost leadership strategy will be more sensitive to the effect of price changes of the product that make them more cautious in financial related decision making related to their operational activities. However, companies should also consider that there was an increasing level of customers’ awareness toward how companies should conduct their businesses. This would relate to the notion of company social responsibility toward its environment and its contribution to balance the interest of financial profit consideration with sustainable environmental protection as public and social issue. Furthermore, although this study was not aimed to find the causes of the differences, result of ANOVA test revealed that there were differences in firms’ approaches to the natural environment based on the industrial typology. This result supported Aragon-Correa’s (1998) that the typology of industry should be involved to determined whether there are significant differences in the green management practices across industries.

Firm Approach to the Natural Environment and Its Determinant

September 7th, 2007 by dian-ekowati-heriqbaldi

Paper to be presented in Selangor, Malaysia, December 3-4, 2007

In last decade, business organizations are more aware about the importance of environmental issue and its impacts on all levels of organizational operations than ever before (Greeno, 1994; Porter and Van der Linde, 1994; Aragon-Correa, 1998). Many factors such as pressures from customers and government regulation, neighborhood groups, mass media, as well as trade associations were stated as factors contributing to firms approach toward their natural environment. Each of those parties brought about potential environmental risks that have to be faced by the organizations (Henriques & Sadorsky, 1996). These could be opportunities as well as threats for companies, especially if these pressures were not well managed. Along with the study of Henriques and Sadorsky (1996), Lawrence and Morell (1995) also stated that there were five factors motivating organizations to conduct proactive natural environmental management practices, which are regulations, competitive advantages, stakeholders pressures, critical event, and top management pressures.

At this point, the classification of firm approach to the natural environment and factors that drive companies to conduct more responsible environmental management practice were becoming interesting issue in Indonesia. This was especially because there were controversial cases related to environmental violations in Indonesia, which showed that there was relatively low awareness on green management practices in Indonesia. This study was aimed to analyze Indonesian companies’ awareness on natural environmental management practices. The focus of analysis was on the firm approach to the natural environment and factors determining the implementation of such approach.

By employing factor analysis, this study was able to reveal that in the case of Indonesia, firm approach to the natural environment could be categorized into three different approaches, which are “traditional environmental operation, “modern/voluntary prevention”, and “image building/information.”. In general, the results of this study were aligned with those of Aragon-Correa (1998). Related to the profile of commitment toward natural environment that was adopted from Henriques and Sadorsky (1999) and categorized by employing Roome’s (1994) category, the results showed that leading edge cluster were comprised of 55 companies, environmental excellence cluster with 4 companies, compliance plus cluster also with 4 companies, compliance cluster was comprised of 18 companies, and noncompliance cluster with 13 companies.

Moreover, this study also tried to explore factors or source of pressures that determine the implementation of firm approach to the natural environment. The result showed that the highest pressure came from public society/community, followed by government regulation, customers, employees, considerations for efficiency profitability, controlling cost, shareholders, environmental organizations, media, and other lobbying groups, trade association, competitors, and suppliers, that was perceived as the lowest source of pressure. This finding was different from the result of Henriques and Sadorsky (1999) which showed that the first and second highest pressure came from government regulations and controlling cost.

A tribute for my lovely niece who had just passed away… and for my brother and sister in law…

Yesterday, I feel like I was lightning struck in the day light when I heard that my brother-in-law’s daughter had passed away…early in the morning. I just could not bring my self to believe it..

I and my husband took the most possible earliest flight from Surabaya to Jakarta.

I have had to push my self to be strong and tough when I met my brother and sister… but I failed. I have to cry with them in grievance… sorrow… I had to bring my self to see the pictures of her cute little face, and suddenly…. something’s I feel inside my heart… I just want to see my kids…in Surabaya… I wanna go home.

I just realize from my brother case that it is one of the moment that you will regret for your whole life when you cannot see and touch your beloved person….

The lesson learned is that do spend more quality time with your beloved people… just more time… I know I love my family, I love my husband, and I love my 3 georgeous kids… I love them with all my life…. and I cannot imagine something bad fall upon them… Please yaa ALLAH yaa ROB, please bless my family and take care of us all….

I cried and cried and cried and cried…. I cannot do anything to turnback the time, but I might be able to prepare for a better future for my beloved family….

I promise to become a better mom for my family… I promise…and I will do it…with all my heart !

Signs of INCOMPETENT (Academic) LEADERS !!!

June 22nd, 2007 by dian-ekowati-heriqbaldi

Somehow, I think about the leadership theory I teach in the university. Does the theory give us something different that really reflects the assessment of good leader? Leadership is situational…that was Hersey and Blanchard say… however, none of the theories reveals about factors constructing ineffective leadership….

Below…you may read one of them…as an enlightment of all of those existing theories you have learn formerly… It is ironic… yet, incompetent leaders surround us, indeed !!! WHAT ABOUT YOUR LEADER..?

An article written by Chris Ortiz on Source : http://bulliedacade mics.blogspot. com/2007_ 03_01_archive. html.

Poor leadership surrounds us, it’s a fact of life and they seemingly
find a way to keep their jobs. They are more focused on their personal
needs and not of the professional needs of those below them. They have a
hard time developing their employees because they lack the proper
management techniques to do so. A leader is someone who you would follow
to a place you would not go alone. Leadership is about action not status.

However, the question is, how do we know when we are dealing with these
flaw ridden individuals. A lot of the time, a poor manager can make the
perception that he/she is busy and organized. I have developed a small
guideline that can help pinpoint these leaders.

Incompetent [Academic] Leaders will:
1. Delegate work rather than balance work loads. This allows all
attention to be diverted from them in case of failure. It may seem to
them that are managing their people but in actuality they are creating
work imbalances within the group. It can create unnecessary overtime for
some and under utilization of others. A good manager is aware of the
skill sets of all the people below them and should allocate work
accordingly while trying to enhance the skills of everyone to be even
more productive.

2. Reduce all answers to Yes or No rather than explaining their
reasoning. This is an example of a crisis manager who can not think
farther than a few hours ahead. A yes/no manager finds it a waste of
time to find the real answer through intellectual thought. They are
already thinking about the next crisis.

3. Not separate personal life from professional life. They will bring
their personal problem to work. Working for these types of managers can
be very dramatic. They are unable to separate their emotional imbalances
while trying to manage people. They are less focused and will not give
you the attention and direction you need for success.

4. Manage crisis. If you are a company that has crisis managers, then
you can say goodbye to innovation and progression. Proactive thinking is
critical to the success of any company. If you are not finding ways to
stop or reduce the amount of crisis that has to be managed, then your
competition will pass you by. Leaders have to think out of the box and
make change.

5. Create an environment where mistakes are unacceptable. Being held
accountable for wrong decisions is a fear for them. Making mistakes only
helps you become a better person, manager, etc. I use the analogy of a
basketball player that has no fouls. If they are not going for the ball
and taking chances with their opponent, then they are trying hard
enough. Take a chance and don’t be scared.

6. Humiliate or reprimand an employee within a group. This is a clear
and visible sign of a poor leader. A good leader takes employee problems
away from a group setting to a more private setting. If you have a boss
that does this, it is time for a visit to human resources.

7. Not stand behind subordinates when they fail. Never leave your people
to hang out to dry. Always back them up, right, wrong, or indifferent.
If an employee tries their best in a situation and they fail to come
through. They should be commended on their effort and not punished for
the failure

8. Encourage hard workers not smart workers. I am not impressed with
hard workers. A hard worker is usually defined by hours. Smart workers
are the ones that I hire and embrace. Smart workers understand the
concept of time management and multi-tasking. Poor leaders miss this
connection. Smart workers are methodical in their thinking and can
generally be successful because of their abilities management projects
and time. Hard workers may take twice as long to do the work. It is
important to assign work accordingly to the skills and personalities

9. Judge people on hours not performance. This is similar to #8. Again,
I am not impressed with overtime junkies. They have lost all perspective
on a healthy family/balance. Bad managers will promote the employees
that work the most hours and not look at the smart ones who work less,
meaning have better time management. Stop watching the lock.

10. Act differently in front of their leaders. This is an indication of
low self-confidence. They have doubts about their own ability to lead
and they will act like little children when authority is present. A
confident person acts the same around everyone. Remember, have respect
for them, but also have self-respect.

Desperate Students…on Maths !

Showletter1_2

This one is really funny…
I found this on the national reviewer discussion forum…
Everybody was discussing that they were quite lucky not to have this case in their classes.
I do really hope that none of my academic colleagues ends up their teaching like this…
and…
I do hope that none of my former, current, or even my potential students to end up their math examination by hanging their head on the edge of the square root sign ! hiks !
are you this desperate in maths ?…..

Try to embrace what you have been given…

November 30th, 2006 by dian-ekowati-heriqbaldi

Very Late at Night of November 30, 2006….

I was walking toward my water dispenser to get some fresh water… barely sleepy as a consequence of a jetlag for having travel back from London-HongKong-Surabaya. The television was broadcasting a show called KickAndy… a bit of intriguing kind of show…  The topic was about a woman, called Lennes Imut-Imut…which is awarded as the smallest/tiniest counsellor by Indonesian Record Museum (MURI). She is a community teacher who has height about 75cm…and cannot walk… The most interesting thing from her is that she does not seem to feel "unperfect". She keeps laughing and smiling….a very very happy person. Bless her….

It is fascinating to think about the fact that some of us are not so fortunate for having -what you call- unperfect bodies… Yet, some of those who have perfect ones, keep calling for the need to improve them somehow…what a live !

It really depends on how we see things are going… nothing perfect, but still, you have to embrace what our GOD created for us… There is always a bless in disguise… and every cloud have a silver lining…. Things might be the same, but how we think about the same thing might be different… do not try to be a similar person or try to have similar thoughts with other…

Just realize that you are created to be different… YOU ARE DIFFERENT ! and…it is okey, to be different, we are meant to be UNIQUE.
